In 2010, JP Giroud was appointed Chevalier in the Order of the Légion d’Honneur. (From Britannica: Legion of Honour is an order of the French republic, created by Napoleon Bonaparte as a general military and civil order of merit conferred without regard to birth or religion provided that anyone admitted swears to uphold liberty and equality.) Giroud wrote his acceptance speech in verses, which is rarely done. An excerpt on the discovery of equations is included below in the original French and a lightly edited automatic translation in English.

La découverte d’équations, JP Giroud, 2010

Michel Ange disait, parlant de ses statues,

Qu’elles étaient bien présentes, de marbre revêtues,

A l’intérieur du bloc tiré de la carrière;

L’équation qui l’exprime existe par le fait même;

The discovery of equations, JP Giroud, 2010

Michelangelo said of his statues,

That they were very present, clad in marble,

Inside the block taken from the quarry;

And that his only merit was to extract them

Ridding them of the extra marble

Which, from the start, made them invisible.

Michelangelo believed that, as he sculpted,

He discovered only a work that existed,

All along buried in its marble matrix,

And, at last, by his hand, revealed.

Instrument of destiny, his hand when it worked

Did not create, but only discovered.

All things considered, the same can be said

When it comes to equations published from time immemorial.

It can be said that, as soon as a phenomenon exists,

The equation that expresses it does exist;

But you have to find it, because it's well hidden,

As anyone who's ever looked for it can attest.

Thus by forces of ignorance, equations are

Long kept unknown and held back.

And it's a great fortune to belong

To those whose mission it is to discover them.
