The Robert M. Koerner award was established by the Geosynthetic Materials Association (GMA) in 2016 and is awarded every two years. Bob Koerner (1933 – 2019), the author of the classic textbook “Designing with Geosynthetics”, was professor at Drexel University and founder of the Geosynthetics Research Institute. Giroud delivered the Koerner Lecture during the Geosynthetics 2023 Conference, which was held on February 5-8, 2023, in Kansas City, Missouri, as a webinar on February 7, 2023. The presentation included herein is a version of the Koerner Lecture presented on May 18, 2023, as webinar organized by the Fabricated Geomembrane Institute (FGI).
The title of the lecture indicates that the focus is on minimizing liquid losses from containment facilities lined with geomembranes and differentiates between the measures taken before the end of geomembrane installation, with the goal of “zero leak”, and things that can happen and must be prevented during service, with the goal of “zero leakage”. “Zero leak” should be interpreted as few and small geomembrane holes. “Zero leakage” should be interpreted as minimal liquid flow to the underlying soil. Containment is familiar to geotechnical engineers from landfills, where the height of liquid (leachate) contained is typically low. This lecture focuses on reservoirs, because of the significant depth of the contained liquid, which makes the goal of “zero”, i.e. minimal, leakage more challenging.
Measures related to the geomembrane installation concern both design, which should ensure that the geomembrane can be installed without excessive difficulty, and construction, which should include electrical leak location. Advice given is supported with case studies, including a counter-example of successive ponding tests and geomembrane repairs that ended up increasing the leakage, because of further damages to an inappropriately installed geomembrane due to worker traffic during the tests and stresses induced by the successive drawdowns.
